The Yemeni Rial was introduced in 1990, before the introduction of YER, there existed the south Yemeni dinar, which had existed since 1972. It replaced the British Ocean Territory rupee.
Since 1990 the YER has been convertible freely, however, in 2010, due to the continuous dropping in value of the currency, the Central Bank of Yemen had to intervene to protect the currency value and this resulted in a very serious decline of foreign reserves.
